Dubai’s L’ÉCOLE Middle East, the School of Jewelry Arts, has launched its newest exhibition, Men’s Rings, Yves Gastou Collection, offering the public an exclusive view of a remarkable collection of 705 rings. This exhibition, held at L’ÉCOLE’s campus in the Dubai Design District, is part of the city’s 10th Dubai Design Week, a collaborative effort with d3 to celebrate design innovation in the region.
A Tribute to the Heritage and Art of Men’s Rings
The Men’s Rings exhibition sheds light on the often-overlooked history of men’s jewelry, focusing on rings as timeless symbols of wealth and power. Reflecting on the enduring appeal of this ancient jewelry, Sophie Claudel, Director of L’ÉCOLE Middle East, said, “We are honored to share the Men’s Rings, Yves Gastou Collection with our Middle Eastern audience. This collection highlights the rich cultural heritage of jewelry while resonating with Dubai’s unique blend of tradition and modernity.” The enthusiastic turnout at the event attests to the region’s appreciation for art, design, and heritage.
The collection’s unique journey began in Paris in 2018 and has since traveled to Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, expanding with each exhibit. For its Dubai debut, new rings were added, representing everything from ancient Egyptian designs to contemporary styles. Each ring showcases intricate craftsmanship and carries with it fascinating cultural significance, a testament to Yves Gastou’s dedication to men’s jewelry. Gastou, a renowned French antique dealer, amassed this collection over four decades, driven by a passion for exceptional, symbolic pieces. His son Victor Gastou, sharing his father’s love for jewelry, remarked, “There is magic in rings. When you have a beautiful ring, you touch it, and it becomes a part of you.”
Engaging Exhibit Design and a Unique Viewing Experience
The exhibition’s scenography immerses visitors in three distinctive environments, each echoing a theme from Gastou’s collection:
- The Dark Room: A mysterious space inspired by the nighttime streets, inviting guests to explore at their own pace.
- The Red Room: A bold, red palette with endless reflections and striking displays representing Gastou’s provocative spirit.
- The White Room: A minimalist representation of Gastou’s mental space, symbolizing his fascination with collecting.
This thoughtful design enhances the collection’s impact, highlighting both the individuality and interconnectedness of each piece.
Expanding Jewelry Arts through Education and Philanthropy
In line with L’ÉCOLE Middle East’s mission, the exhibition will be accompanied by jewelry courses aimed at sharing the art of jewelry with a broad audience. New offerings like “The Making of a Jewel” and “Discovering the World of Gemstones” delve into both the technical and historical aspects of jewelry. Open to all skill levels, these courses provide participants with hands-on learning opportunities.
Furthermore, L’ÉCOLE Middle East has renewed its partnership with Dubai Cares, committing all proceeds from courses, talks, and conferences to support youth education initiatives. This collaboration underlines L’ÉCOLE’s commitment to social responsibility and empowering young minds.
Public Open Day and Upcoming Events
For those eager to experience the world of jewelry arts, L’ÉCOLE Middle East will host a Public Open Day on Saturday, November 9th. This event will offer a wide array of activities, including course demonstrations, workshops for kids, a guided tour of the Men’s Rings exhibition, and a special Jewels of Cinema film screening in collaboration with Cinema Akil.
