As the summer sun intensifies across the Gulf, travellers seeking a cooler, more tranquil escape need look no further than Germany’s pristine lakes and lush forests. This season, the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) launches a renewed edition of its “Embrace German Nature” campaign, inviting GCC travellers to explore serene lakeside destinations that combine natural beauty, cultural richness, and sustainable luxury. From emerald mountain lakes to forest-lined houseboat havens, Germany’s vast inland waters offer restorative experiences away from the traditional tourist trail.

For those drawn to dramatic alpine scenery and active pursuits, the cycle route from Lake Constance to Lake Königssee is a breathtaking journey through the German south. Beginning in the island town of Lindau, travellers cycle past glimmering lakes like Tegernsee and storybook villages in the Allgäu region, all backed by snow-dusted peaks. Along the way, iconic landmarks such as Neuschwanstein Castle offer cultural interludes amidst natural splendour. The route ends at Lake Königssee, known for its mirror-like waters, cliffside chapels, and silent electric boat rides that glide into hidden corners of the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Just north of Berlin lies the Mecklenburg Lake District—a vast waterway network perfect for slow, mindful travel. At its heart is Lake Müritz, surrounded by gentle hills, reed-covered shores, and wildlife-rich forests. Visitors can paddle through tranquil channels or captain a houseboat without the need for a boating license. Imagine mooring in secluded coves under starlit skies or docking by lakeside villages where nature and hospitality flow seamlessly together. It’s a summer dream for families, couples, or solo adventurers looking to unplug and reconnect with nature.

Germany’s commitment to conservation makes it one of Europe’s greenest travel destinations, with 33% of the land under environmental protection. Nature lovers can hike through Müritz National Park, spotting rare bird species like cranes and white-tailed eagles, or cycle the scenic Müritz Circular Route. Stargazers will find solace in protected areas such as Nossentiner and Schwinzer Heide, where minimal light pollution reveals a galaxy of constellations above serene lakes. Here, the pace slows, the air is cleaner, and the mind finds space to breathe.

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region extends all the way to the Baltic Sea, blending coastal relaxation with rich history. Red-brick Hanseatic cities like Stralsund and Wismar captivate with UNESCO-listed architecture, while spa towns such as Heiligendamm offer wellness rooted in Belle Époque charm. On the island of Usedom, travellers can enjoy white-sand beaches, thermal spas, and open-air concerts framed by sea breeze and coastal pine. Schwerin Castle, perched on its own lake island, brings a fairy-tale quality to cultural excursions and seasonal events.

One of Germany’s strongest appeals lies in its commitment to climate-friendly travel. Many lake and coastal destinations are easily reached from major cities like Berlin and Hamburg thanks to frequent and efficient InterCity and ICE train services. Towns such as Waren (Müritz) and Neustrelitz offer free regional travel through guest cards, encouraging car-free exploration. Whether cycling through nature parks or taking a silent electric boat across a lake, travellers are invited to explore Germany in a way that’s gentle on the environment and rich in experience.

“Germany’s hidden lakes offer the perfect answer to the summer heat,” said Yamina Sofo, Director of GNTO GCC. “With refreshing natural beauty, cultural depth, and sustainable experiences that resonate deeply with GCC travellers, our ‘Embrace German Nature’ campaign celebrates slowness, authenticity, and well-being.” With over 300,000 kilometres of hiking trails, 76,000 kilometres of cycling routes, and access to 18 biosphere reserves and 16 national parks, Germany isn’t just a destination—it’s an invitation to connect, breathe, and restore. This summer, let Germany’s lakes and landscapes offer not just a cool breeze, but a meaningful reset.
