Wedgwood, in collaboration with Jonathan Anderson and the Estate of Lucie Rie, unveils a collection that bridges history and modernity, giving life to unseen designs from one of the 20th century’s most revered potters. The partnership introduces limited-edition teacups, saucers, and mugs that embody a rare dialogue between past and present, artistry and craftsmanship.

The collaboration pays tribute to Lucie Rie’s legacy, as in 1964 she created designs for Wedgwood that were never produced. Known for her purposeful imperfections, sgraffito techniques, and functionalist elegance, Rie’s vision remained confined to archives—until now. With Jonathan Anderson’s passion for her work and Wedgwood’s expertise, the pieces finally arrive, more than six decades later, as she once imagined them.

Central to the collection are teacups and coffee cups with saucers, rendered in Wedgwood’s iconic Jasper blue with white inlays. Each piece is handcrafted by artisans using time-honoured techniques, from careful moulding to high-firing, creating a matte finish that is tactile yet refined. The collection also introduces a series of mugs inspired by 5th-century Greek forms drawn from Anderson’s own collection, presented in striking colour pairings of Blue and Saxon Blue, Chocolate Brown and Black, and Canary Yellow and Mimosa Yellow.

For Jonathan Anderson, the collaboration represents both personal passion and creative reverence. “Lucie Rie is one of the greatest potters of the 20th Century. I’ve been collecting her work for many years, and I think she would be thrilled to see these pieces finally brought to life, especially in this charitable context,” he explains. The proceeds will benefit the newly established Lucie Rie and Hans Coper Foundation, supporting archival preservation, research, and scholarship.

Wedgwood’s artisans bring unmatched precision to the project, employing techniques such as hand-turning, ribbing, and trimming to achieve flawless finishes. Whether shaping Rie’s delicate forms or crafting the ribbed mugs, the process celebrates the union of human skill and machine precision. Each item is a testament to Wedgwood’s centuries-old reputation for excellence, now reimagined through a contemporary lens.

This global launch will be available from 19 September at select locations, including Harrods and Selfridges in the UK, Wedgwood.com, JW Anderson boutiques in London, Milan and Tokyo, and in select stores across China, Japan, and the US. The limited availability underscores the rarity of the collection, destined to become cherished by collectors and admirers of both fashion and fine craft.

With this release, Wedgwood continues its legacy of innovation rooted in tradition. By bringing Lucie Rie’s unseen designs to life and aligning them with Jonathan Anderson’s creative vision, the collaboration embodies the timeless power of craftsmanship, the endurance of design, and the profound beauty of objects that connect history with the present moment.
