Defender Makes History With a Landmark Victory at the Dakar Rally

There are victories, and then there are moments that recalibrate a brand’s legend. In its debut appearance at the world’s most demanding off-road event, Defender claimed a defining triumph at the Dakar Rally, finishing first and second in the Stock class. Across the vast, unforgiving terrain of the Saudi desert, Defender Rally transformed heritage into performance. This was not an arrival marked by caution, but one defined by authority.

Piloted by Rokas Baciuška and Oriol Vidal, the winning drive unfolded with remarkable composure over two relentless weeks of racing. Their performance was mirrored by teammates Sara Price with Sean Berriman close behind, while Stéphane Peterhansel and Mika Metge delivered another assured finish. Together, the team dominated much of the rally, frequently occupying the podium across stages. The result was as collective as it was historic.

At the heart of the achievement was the all-new Defender Dakar D7X-R, competing in the Stock class for production-based cars. Derived from the Defender OCTA, the rally car remained closely aligned with its road-going counterpart beneath its competitive enhancements. Robust architecture, drivetrain layout, and power delivery formed its foundation. What followed was a test not of theory, but of durability under extreme pressure.

Over nearly two weeks, the three Defender entries covered vast distances through sand dunes, rocky plains, and punishing heat. Precision and resilience became as critical as speed, demanding unwavering focus from drivers, engineers, and mechanics alike. Night after night, the cars were rebuilt and recalibrated. By the final stages, capability had evolved into confidence.

The emotional weight of the victory was unmistakable as the Defenders crossed the finish line together. Dakar is often described as the Everest of motorsport, not for its glamour, but for its capacity to break the unprepared. For a debut team to command the category so emphatically signalled more than competitiveness. It suggested readiness.

This win also carried strategic significance, marking the opening round of the World Rally-Raid Championship season. Dakar became the proving ground where Defender’s modern engineering ethos met its storied reputation for endurance. The landscape may have changed, but the philosophy remained constant. Purpose-built performance, tested without compromise.

As Defender Rally prepares to continue its campaign across the championship calendar, the debut Dakar victory stands as a pivotal chapter. Not a celebratory footnote, but a foundational statement. In one of motorsport’s most uncompromising arenas, Defender did not simply participate. It established itself—measured, resolute, and entirely at home.
