RM Sotheby’s has unveiled an extraordinary highlight for its upcoming Munich sale on October 18, 2025—a 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6, one of the rarest and most celebrated 2-litre sports racers in Porsche’s history. This lightweight marvel, chassis number 906-146, stands out as one of just 52 customer cars ever produced, making it a crown jewel for collectors and motorsport enthusiasts alike.

Originally delivered to Racing Team Holland via Pon’s Holland, the Dutch Porsche importer, the Carrera 6 came dressed in a distinctive orange hue—a nod to its national racing roots. Beneath its sleek, aerodynamic bodywork lies a 210-horsepower Carrera 6 engine, 54 kilograms lighter than the powertrain of a standard Porsche 911 from the era. Weighing in at just 580 kg, the car’s low drag and nimble form embodied Porsche’s commitment to engineering excellence.

Its competitive debut took place at Zandvoort on April 24, 1966, where Wim Loos captured a class win in the 2-litre category. This early victory marked the beginning of a successful racing campaign that saw the car in the hands of noted drivers such as David van Lennep and Ben Pon Jr. The 906 went on to rack up podium finishes at Trier, the Paris Grand Prix at Montlhéry, and Zolder—while even being entered in the prestigious 1000 Km of Spa event.

What sets this particular example apart is not only its competition pedigree but its continued evolution. The car eventually donned a new white livery accented with the Dutch national colours—blue, red, and white stripes—under which it continued to race until 1971. Today, it is offered with a tuned 911 2.4 S engine for drivability, while retaining its original 901/20 engine—a rare and invaluable asset for restoration purists.

Experts including Walter Naeher, Rolf Sprenger, and Andy Prill have contributed to the car’s provenance reports, ensuring its authenticity and historical value are meticulously documented. The estimated sale price ranges between €1.8 and €2.2 million, a figure that reflects not only its rarity but its unique standing in Porsche’s motorsport narrative.

With only 65 chassis ever built and this particular model carrying a well-documented and illustrious history, the 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 promises to draw substantial interest from global collectors. Its presence at RM Sotheby’s Munich auction reinforces the event’s status as one of Europe’s most significant collector car sales.

As consignments continue to roll in, RM Sotheby’s positions this sale as a flagship European event not to be missed. For those with a passion for motorsport heritage and Porsche engineering, October in Munich might just be the moment to own a piece of racing history.

The 906 Carrera 6 represents a pivotal moment in Porsche’s evolution from dominant class competitor to overall endurance racing contender. Its tubular steel chassis, Kamm-tail aerodynamics, and advanced fiberglass body construction made it a technological marvel of the 1960s, influencing future prototypes like the 907 and 908. More than just a race-winning machine, it signified Porsche’s ambition to challenge larger, more powerful rivals through innovation and lightweight engineering—principles that remain core to the brand’s philosophy today.

This particular example’s exceptional originality, competition history, and mechanical pedigree offer more than collector appeal—it embodies the spirit of an era when racing was raw, brave, and beautifully analogue. Whether destined for a concours lawn, vintage racing grid, or private museum, the 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 is not simply a car—it’s a living chapter of motorsport lore, poised to inspire a new custodian at RM Sotheby’s landmark Munich event.
