In the world of luxury automobiles, few names evoke as much reverence as Bugatti. With a legacy spanning over a century, Bugatti has continually pushed the boundaries of performance and design. The latest marvel from this storied brand is the Bugatti Tourbillon, an automotive masterpiece that promises to be a timeless icon.

A Legacy of Innovation

Since its rebirth in 2004, Bugatti has redefined automotive excellence. The Veyron, with its groundbreaking 1001 horsepower, and its successor, the Chiron, which boasted an astonishing 1500 horsepower, set new benchmarks in the hyper sports car segment. Central to these vehicles was the unparalleled 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine. Today, Bugatti embarks on a new journey with the Tourbillon, a car that reimagines the very essence of hyper sports cars.

Guided by History

Four generations of bugatti excellence (LEFT TO RIGHT) : the Bugatti EB110 (1991-1995), Bugatti Veyron (2005-2015), Bugatti Chiron (2016-present) and the present Bugatti Tourbillon (2024 onward)

Under the leadership of CEO Mate Rimac, the development of the Bugatti Tourbillon was deeply influenced by the brand’s illustrious past. Rimac reflects on the guiding philosophies of Ettore Bugatti: “If comparable, it is no longer Bugatti” and “Nothing is too beautiful.” These mantras shaped the design and engineering of the Tourbillon, ensuring it stands as a testament to Bugatti’s commitment to beauty, performance, and luxury.

The Tourbillon draws inspiration from iconic models like the Type 57SC Atlantic, renowned for its unparalleled beauty; the Type 35, the most successful racing car in history; and the Type 41 Royale, a symbol of luxury and ambition. These legends form the blueprint for the Tourbillon, a car designed not just for the present, but for eternity.

A Name Steeped in Heritage

Breaking from tradition, the Tourbillon is the first Bugatti in over two decades not powered by the W16 engine and not named after a legendary Bugatti driver. Instead, it takes its name from the world of horology. The term “tourbillon” refers to a watchmaking invention that enhances precision by counteracting the effects of gravity. This reference to timeless mechanical artistry perfectly encapsulates the essence of Bugatti’s latest creation.

Design: Shaped by Speed

Every Bugatti is a masterpiece of design and engineering, and the Tourbillon is no exception. The car’s ability to exceed 400 km/h necessitates meticulous attention to aerodynamics and thermodynamics. The Tourbillon’s design is influenced by four key elements from Bugatti’s history: the horseshoe grille, the Bugatti Line, the central ridge, and the dual color split.

Frank Heyl, Bugatti’s Director of Design, emphasizes the importance of aerodynamics and innovation, drawing inspiration from classic models like the Type 35 and the Type 57SC Atlantic. The Tourbillon’s design exudes a sense of speed and elegance, with its lowered roofline, dramatic proportions, and innovative aerodynamic solutions.

Interior: Timeless Elegance

The interior of the Tourbillon is a testament to Bugatti’s commitment to timelessness. In an era where digital screens quickly become outdated, Bugatti has embraced an analogue approach inspired by horology. The centerpiece of the cabin is an instrument cluster crafted by Swiss watchmakers, made up of over 600 parts, including titanium and gemstones. This feature underscores Bugatti’s commitment to timeless mechanical elegance.

The center console, a blend of crystal glass and aluminum, showcases the intricate workings of the switches and the engine start lever. The only digital screen in the car is hidden from view until needed, preserving the interior’s timeless aesthetic.

Powertrain and Performance

The Bugatti Tourbillon introduces an all-new 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine, developed in collaboration with Cosworth, paired with a sophisticated electric powertrain. This combination produces an astounding 1800 horsepower, with 1000 hp from the combustion engine and 800 hp from the electric motors. The result is a car that accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 2.0 seconds and reaches a top speed of 445 km/h.

The Tourbillon’s advanced hybrid system, lightweight construction, and innovative engineering make it not only a performance powerhouse but also an environmentally conscious choice, reducing emissions compared to its predecessors.

Engineering Excellence

Built on a next-generation carbon composite chassis, the Tourbillon incorporates numerous weight-saving innovations and advanced materials. The suspension system, brakes, and aerodynamics have all been meticulously engineered to ensure unparalleled performance and agility. The car features a host of advanced technologies, including an aerodynamically optimized rear wing that provides higher downforce at slower speeds and acts as an airbrake. Additionally, the diffuser concept integrated within the car’s structure helps maintain aerodynamic balance.

Limited Production and Future-Proof Design

Scheduled for customer deliveries in 2026, the Bugatti Tourbillon represents the pinnacle of automotive engineering and design. With a limited production run of 250 units and a starting price of 3.8 million euros, the Tourbillon is set to become a coveted collector’s item.

Emphasizing Bugatti’s decision to move away from the W16 engine to the new V16 hybrid marks a significant shift in the brand’s engineering approach. The focus on analogue components, like the fixed hub steering wheel and the hidden digital screen, ensures that the car’s interior remains timeless, suitable for concours lawns for centuries to come.

Mate Rimac encapsulates the spirit of the Tourbillon, stating, “Our philosophy has been to elevate every aspect of the Chiron, seeking elegant and sophisticated solutions to create a timeless masterpiece. The result is a car that is not only the most powerful Bugatti to date but also a beautiful expression of mechanical fascination and technical beauty.”

The Bugatti Tourbillon is more than just a car; it is a statement of timeless luxury and performance, destined to be celebrated for generations to come.
