An Elegant Transformation of 18th-Century Architecture
Renowned for merging classic Italian artistry with contemporary elegance, Rocco Forte Hotels is poised to expand its prestigious portfolio with the signing of the historic Palazzo Castelluccio in the enchanting town of Noto, Sicily. Scheduled to open in 2026, this exquisite hotel will encapsulate the rich heritage of the 18th century while offering modern luxury in a breathtaking setting.
A Jewel in the Heart of Sicily
Palazzo Castelluccio, an iconic noble residence boasting an impressive 50,000 square feet, will feature 31 lavishly appointed rooms, each a tribute to the opulent architecture of its era. The hotel promises to be a gem within the Rocco Forte collection, joining two existing properties in Sicily: Villa Igiea in Palermo and Verdura Resort in Sciacca. Guests can anticipate a world-class dining experience with an on-site restaurant and bar, lush garden lounge, state-of-the-art meeting and event spaces, a spa, and a gym, all curated to provide a truly luxurious experience.
The design collaboration is led by the esteemed duo of Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen, who will work closely with Olga Polizzi, Deputy Chairman and Director of Design at Rocco Forte Hotels. Polizzi remarked, “Sicily has a special place at the heart of our brand and the beautiful town of Noto is a destination in itself. The Palazzo Castelluccio is a perfect fit for us, with an inspiring history and enchanting aesthetic that tells the story of its location. Each room will blend inherited charm and contemporary luxury to evoke the same timeless grandeur that fills the rest of the Palazzo.”
A Journey Through Time
Originally constructed in 1782 by the influential Marquis di Lorenzo del Castelluccio, this palazzo stands as one of the largest noble residences in the Val di Noto. Unlike the predominantly Baroque architecture found throughout Noto, the Palazzo Castelluccio showcases a distinctive neoclassical façade. Designed to accommodate family, staff, and grand gatherings, the residence once featured 105 rooms, including a music room, chapel, and ballroom.
Since its public opening in 2018, the palazzo has retained its charm with blue silk-covered walls that shimmer beneath majestic crystal chandeliers, alongside meticulously restored original Caltagirone ceramic floors. Outside, a lush garden, framed by palm trees and vibrant bougainvillea, invites guests to enjoy the surrounding beauty. The guest rooms combine beautifully decorated trompe l’oeil walls, rich fabrics, and antiques sourced from prestigious auction houses, creating an atmosphere of refined elegance.
Moschino and Vergeylen expressed their excitement about this project, stating, “Palazzo Castelluccio is more than just a luxury hotel—it’s a journey through time, where guests can immerse themselves in the splendour of Sicily’s golden age. Every element has been thoughtfully selected to ensure that the past is not only remembered but celebrated in every detail. The hotel will transport guests to a time when grand balls and princely receptions filled its magnificent halls. Stepping through its doors will feel like entering another era—a time when opulence was the norm and elegance a way of life.”
The Destination: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is celebrated for its Baroque beauty, nestled in the untouched splendor of Southeastern Sicily. Following a devastating earthquake in 1693 that ravaged much of the town, Palazzo Castelluccio was one of the prominent buildings reconstructed a century later. Built from local compacted limestone, the palazzo emanates a golden hue when illuminated by the sun, embodying the region’s architectural elegance.
The city is not only a feast for the eyes but also a hub of history and culture, drawing visitors who seek an authentic Sicilian experience. The artistic richness and culinary delights of Noto, including its famous cannoli and fresh seafood, further enhance its appeal, making it a perfect backdrop for the luxurious offerings of Palazzo Castelluccio.
As Rocco Forte Hotels prepares for its continued expansion—planning four new openings in Milan, Sardinia, Sicily, and Naples in the next three years—Charles Forte, Director of Development, noted, “The acquisition of Palazzo Castelluccio marks a significant milestone in our growth. This intimate and beautiful hotel will deliver a unique charm and authenticity, characteristic of Rocco Forte Hotels. Our brand’s power in Europe enables us to revive celebrated buildings that enhance the community and create unforgettable experiences for our guests.”
