Sony Launches RX1R III: A 61MP Full-Frame Powerhouse in a Compact Body

Sony has officially introduced the RX1R III, the latest evolution of its celebrated RX1R series, marking a significant leap in compact camera performance. Featuring a 61-megapixel full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS sensor and a fixed ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35 mm F2 lens, the RX1R III is designed to deliver professional-grade image quality in a truly palm-sized form factor. This latest release exemplifies Sony’s commitment to marrying advanced imaging technologies with sleek design and portability.

At the heart of the RX1R III is Sony’s BIONZ XR™ image processing engine, which works alongside the high-resolution sensor to deliver outstanding detail, sensitivity, and a wide dynamic range. The optical low-pass filter has been removed, and the sensor’s AR coating reduces glare, allowing for sharper and more vibrant imagery. This makes the RX1R III an exceptional choice for photographers who demand studio-quality results without the bulk.

The camera’s standout AI-based autofocus system—borrowed from Sony’s flagship Alpha models—introduces real-time recognition capabilities that can track subjects with remarkable precision, even when faces are obscured. Boasting 693 phase-detection AF points covering approximately 78% of the image area, the RX1R III ensures rapid and reliable focus in almost any scenario, whether shooting stills or video.

Despite its fixed lens design, the RX1R III offers surprising flexibility. With its Step Crop Shooting function, users can switch seamlessly between focal lengths equivalent to 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm, preserving quality in RAW format for post-production adjustments. The lens also features a macro ring that allows for close-up photography at just 20 cm, ideal for detailed shots with stunning clarity.

Sony caters to visual storytellers with twelve built-in Creative Looks, allowing users to customise hue, saturation, brightness, and contrast. Notable options include FL2 for nostalgic tones and FL3 for enhanced vibrancy—both effective across stills and videos. These features make the RX1R III not just a high-performance tool, but also an outlet for artistic expression.

Constructed from lightweight magnesium alloy, the RX1R III boasts a minimalist, ergonomic design. Its intuitive controls, 2.36 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, and USB-C fast charging offer convenience without compromise. A single charge captures up to 300 stills, with expanded shooting options available via external power sources.

Aligned with Sony’s “Road to Zero” sustainability goals, the RX1R III is produced using 100% renewable energy and packaged in environmentally friendly materials. Available from September 2025 in selected Middle East countries, it redefines what a compact camera can be—professional, portable, and purposefully designed for creators on the move.
