Burberry Returns to the Elements With a New Gabardine Capsule

Innovation has always been woven into the fabric of Burberry, and nowhere is this more evident than in gabardine. Invented in the late 19th century, the material remains one of fashion’s most enduring achievements, defined by protection, durability, and quiet elegance. With the new Gabardine Capsule, the house revisits this foundational textile through a contemporary lens. Heritage here is not preserved—it is reanimated.

Set against the raw landscapes of Snowdonia, Wales, the accompanying film captures gabardine in its natural habitat. Wind, rain, and shifting light become collaborators rather than obstacles. The collection is worn by explorers and models alike, reinforcing Burberry’s long-standing relationship with the outdoors. Nature is not a backdrop, but a proving ground.

The capsule arrives as part of the house’s ongoing milestone year, paying tribute to a fabric conceived by Thomas Burberry in 1879. Gabardine’s weather-resistant structure once shielded polar explorers and continues to define modern outerwear. This historical continuity lends the collection emotional weight. Function and romance coexist seamlessly.

Classic outerwear silhouettes form the backbone of the capsule, from parkas and quilted jackets to Harrington and bomber styles. Each is reinterpreted in brushed cotton nylon gabardine, balancing structure with softness. The colour palette—anchored in muted beige and deep green—feels grounded and elemental. It speaks to landscape rather than trend.

Layering pieces extend the narrative indoors, introducing knitwear and jersey designed for warmth and movement. Chunky ribbed textures and relaxed cotton forms are subtly detailed with gabardine panels and trench-inspired elements. Epaulettes and tailored references appear quietly, never overstated. The result is comfort shaped by design intelligence.

Symbolism runs through the collection in considered ways, most notably through a specially designed label inspired by an early-1990s archive campaign. The phrase reflects Burberry’s rural origins and lifelong dialogue with outdoor life. Stitched, appliquéd, and knitted into the pieces, it reads less as branding and more as philosophy. Clothing becomes storytelling.

With the Gabardine Capsule, Burberry reasserts its authority not through reinvention, but through clarity of purpose. This is outerwear that respects weather, terrain, and time itself. In a fashion landscape increasingly driven by speed, Burberry chooses endurance. The countryside, once again, becomes the starting point.
