The Journey Beyond Limits

In an extraordinary alignment of motorsport and space exploration, seven-time Formula One™ world champion Lewis Hamilton has ventured into astronaut flight training, courtesy of Swiss luxury watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen and the Polaris Program. The event, set against the backdrop of the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar, redefines boundaries and celebrates the fusion of ambition, technology, and human potential.

The training mirrors the preparatory regimen of the Polaris Dawn and Inspiration 4 crews, hallmark missions in commercial human spaceflight. This bold initiative also amplifies Hamilton’s broader aspirations beyond racing, embodying his fascination with space and its role in advancing humanity.

Flight Training: A Crucial Step Toward Space

The immersive program was led by John “Slick” Baum, Philanthropy Director and instructor pilot for the Polaris Program. Hamilton’s preparation began with a meticulous briefing on the L-39 Albatros jet and the maneuvers that simulate various conditions astronauts encounter during spaceflights.

In a thrilling hour-long flight, Hamilton experienced accelerations and high g-forces, peaking at an intense 7.5 g—greater than the ascent forces astronauts typically endure. The training also included a zero-gravity simulation, marked by a floating racing glove symbolising weightlessness.

“We put Lewis Hamilton through the same training we used to prepare the Inspiration 4 and Polaris Dawn crews for their missions. He showed truly impressive skills at the controls of the jet and proved that he can pilot any machine, whether it is a powerful race car or a jet. With the astronaut flight training for Lewis Hamilton, we underscore the Polaris Program’s commitment to making space exploration accessible to more people,” remarked Baum.

The Perfect Timekeeper

For this groundbreaking venture, Hamilton donned IWC’s Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team edition. With its highly scratch-resistant and resilient Ceratanium® case, it is the perfect watch to withstand the harsh conditions in the jet cockpit. Lewis wore a dedicated race suit featuring a “space mission” patch with his car number 44. He will wear the same suit during this weekend’s race at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar.

Chris Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen, expressed pride in the partnership. “Since Lewis Hamilton became an IWC Brand Ambassador in 2013, we have created so many unforgettable moments and memories together. As his record-breaking era with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula OneTM Team now draws to a close, we are excited to give him an opportunity to complete a flight training for astronauts and bring him one step closer to space exploration.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Students from Dibia DREAM, a nonprofit championing STEM education for underserved youth, joined Hamilton for the event. Engaging in hands-on activities and interacting with Hamilton, the students epitomized the transformative power of education and ambition. Hamilton’s career journey—spanning humble beginnings in karting to global acclaim in motorsport—served as a beacon of possibility.

Amid the jet’s roar and the excitement of the training, the students’ presence echoed an empowering message: with determination, the sky is no limit—one can conquer racetracks, skies, and even space.

A Legacy of Excellence

IWC Schaffhausen, a pioneer in luxury watchmaking since 1868, continues to redefine timekeeping through innovation and sustainability. Known for its expertise in titanium and ceramics, IWC’s creations, like the Pilot’s Watch, marry technical mastery with timeless elegance.
