Loro Piana marks a century of unparalleled craftsmanship and devotion to the finest natural fibres with an exquisite exhibition, “If You Know, You Know. Loro Piana’s Quest for Excellence.” Held at the prestigious Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai from March 22 to May 5, 2025, this landmark retrospective unveils the Maison’s deep-rooted heritage, an ode to artistry, and its enduring connection to China.

Curated by the esteemed exhibition-maker Judith Clark, the exhibition offers an immersive experience that transcends the traditional boundaries of fashion, weaving together history, art, and sensorial craftsmanship. With landscapes as its central motif, the presentation unfolds through an intricate tapestry of textures, colours, and forms, drawing visitors into the delicate interplay between nature and design. Archival documents and heirloom fabrics stand alongside masterpieces by modern and contemporary artists such as Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, and Enrico Castellani, drawn from both the Sergio and Luisa Loro Piana Collection and the Pinacoteca di Varallo. These works of art engage in a poetic dialogue with Loro Piana’s unparalleled textile innovations, revealing the meticulous processes behind the Maison’s celebrated fabrics.

Spanning over 1,000 square meters, the exhibition offers an intimate encounter with the craftsmanship that defines Loro Piana. A dedicated laboratory space brings to life the precision of fibre selection and quality control, allowing visitors to witness firsthand the meticulous attention that goes into sourcing the world’s most exceptional materials. Specially commissioned silhouettes further elevate this narrative, each ensemble a testament to the seamless fusion of tradition and avant-garde vision.

The exhibition’s multisensory journey extends into sound and motion. A collaborative effort led by Chinese artistic director Guo Wenjing and composer Liu Hao, in harmony with flautist Tang Junqiao and pianist Tim Zhang, orchestrates an immersive soundscape that harmonises the traditions of Italy and China. The poetic sensibilities of Chinese artist Qiu Zhijie come to life in an intricate ink-on-paper map, a reimagining of Sinology that bridges historical depth with contemporary perspectives.

At the heart of the exhibition lies Loro Piana’s ceaseless pursuit of excellence, embodied in the Maison’s tireless travels to source the world’s most precious fibres. This philosophy of distance and discovery finds expression in miniature landscapes that evoke the remote origins of Loro Piana’s most treasured materials: the lush pastures of New Zealand, the rugged terrains of the Andes, the refined mills of France, the artisanal heritage of Japan, and the vast expanses of Inner Mongolia. Scattered throughout the galleries, thirty-three exclusive creations, crafted specifically for the exhibition, form an eloquent dialogue between landscape and garment, between raw material and the mastery that transforms it into timeless luxury.
