Laurent Ferrier’s Classic Auto Horizon: A New Chapter in Time

As Watches and Wonders 2025 casts its elegant shadow over Geneva, Laurent Ferrier introduces a refined addition to its permanent collection: the Classic Auto Horizon. Previously released as a Série Atelier piece with a copper-toned dial, this latest iteration arrives with a fresh horizon blue dial—an evolution both visual and mechanical, that merges classical codes with the momentum of innovation.

At first glance, the Classic Auto Horizon embodies the poetic simplicity that has become a Laurent Ferrier signature. Inspired by the smooth contours of 19th-century pocket watches, the 40mm stainless steel case is a nod to enduring elegance—rounded, harmonious, and discreet. Polished to perfection and topped with domed sapphire crystals, the case isn’t merely a vessel, but a canvas on which the House’s horological artistry unfolds.

The dial is the true star. A soft gradient of horizon blue washes over a satin-brushed center, evoking the stillness and infinite depth of the open sky. Framed by a circular satin-brushed minute track, the design balances legibility and texture with quiet confidence. Laurent Ferrier’s signature Assegai-shaped hands in white gold glide over a subtle central cross, further emphasizing the piece’s symmetry and serenity.

At 3 o’clock, a stamped date aperture gently slopes inward, guiding the eye to the date—a detail delivered in slate grey against a white disc, encased in a fine dark blue frame. This subtle visual gesture not only reinforces the dial’s balance but elevates utility into aesthetic finesse. At 6 o’clock, the small seconds register is finely snailed, punctuated with dark blue markers and a white gold baton-shaped hand. The result is a dial that speaks with minimalism, yet resonates with depth.

The Classic Auto Horizon draws its name from the LF270.01 calibre housed within—Laurent Ferrier’s second self-winding movement with calendar function. First introduced in the Sport Auto, this micro-rotor movement now finds new form in the classic round case, reinforcing the link between performance-driven mechanics and timeless design.

The movement itself is a marvel of technical finesse. Designed and assembled entirely in-house, the calibre LF270.01 features 215 components and 31 jewels, operating at a frequency of 4Hz with a robust 72-hour power reserve. It employs a unidirectional winding system using a 950 platinum micro-rotor positioned between the main plate and rotor bridge, offering exceptional efficiency and stability.

For those familiar with Laurent Ferrier’s legacy, this micro-rotor movement subtly echoes the Maison’s first automatic calibre with a natural escapement. Though the escapement here is a Swiss lever—a more universally robust alternative—it is housed within the same elegant architecture, affirming a lineage of mechanical mastery.

A sapphire case back reveals the full artistry of the LF270.01. The finishing is exemplary—139 separate manual operations bring the calibre to life, from soft-polished internal angles to circular-grained surfaces and satin-brushed bridges. The platinum micro-rotor, inspired by a bird’s feathers, features a new engraving motif that flows into chevron detailing indicating winding direction. It complements the beak-like curvature of the automatic bridge, underscoring the harmony between natural inspiration and functional design.

Each visual element has been considered: the mirror-polished surfaces, rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève, and hand-finished weight bridge serve not just to enhance beauty but to reflect the Maison’s unwavering respect for watchmaking tradition. It’s this tension—between modernity and heritage, between performance and elegance—that defines the Classic Auto Horizon.

Beyond its aesthetic and technical refinement, the Classic Auto Horizon is also a timepiece made to be lived with. Water-resistant to 30 metres and fitted with a taupe goat leather strap lined in tone-on-tone Alcantara, it carries all the codes of a collector’s watch while offering the practicality and resilience required for everyday wear.

This balance is no accident. The LF270.01 movement was initially created for the Sport Auto line, known for its dynamic roots. Its presence here signifies Laurent Ferrier’s intention to blur the lines between formal elegance and contemporary lifestyle—a philosophy increasingly relevant to today’s collectors who seek versatility alongside craftsmanship.

For Laurent Ferrier, the Classic Auto Horizon is more than a new reference—it’s a statement of continuity. It bridges the Maison’s classical design language with its growing embrace of practical functionality and wearability. And while its aesthetic language remains soft-spoken, there is depth in its details, confidence in its construction, and clarity in its purpose.

In a landscape where innovation often comes dressed in excess, the Classic Auto Horizon remains understated. It invites intimacy rather than spectacle, contemplation rather than display. It doesn’t need to shout—because excellence, in its purest form, never does
