From Mountain Air to Misty Skies: Why Oman Is the GCC’s Ultimate Summer Escape

While the rest of the Gulf swelters under summer’s harsh glare, Oman offers a refreshing alternative — a destination where the air is cooler, the landscapes greener, and the experiences more grounded in authenticity. From the mist-covered mountains of Dhofar to the breezy altitude of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Oman stands as the region’s most compelling summer escape.

High in the Hajar Mountains lies Al Jabal Al Akhdar, a sanctuary of serenity perched at 2,000 metres. Known as The Green Mountain, it’s a place where wild roses bloom, villages cling to terraced cliffs, and temperatures hover well below the regional average. Here, time slows down. Guests can meditate at sunrise, enjoy mountain picnics, or indulge in fresh Omani cuisine while taking in panoramic views—making it an ideal retreat for those craving calm and connection.

Further south, Dhofar transforms under the spell of the Khareef season. Unlike anywhere else in the Gulf, this monsoon period turns arid landscapes into lush, fog-draped hills. It’s an otherworldly change — where tropical greenery takes over the desert, and cool rain brings locals and tourists outdoors in celebration.

At the heart of the experience is Khareef Dhofar 2025, a sprawling, joyful festival celebrating Omani culture and global entertainment. Salalah’s streets light up with drone displays, musical performances, themed parades like the Emoji Carnival, and zones made just for children. Events like The Princess Palace and interactive theatre productions ensure families are at the centre of this experience.

Adventurous travellers will also find plenty to explore. Whether it’s competing in the Salalah Marathon, cheering on racers at the Dhofar Drag Racing Championship, or cycling in the Tour of Salalah, there’s no shortage of energy. Public parks and festival grounds are equipped for movement, encouraging everyone to walk, cycle, or play amidst the natural surroundings.

Oman’s summer charm also lies in its seamless blend of heritage and hospitality. Visitors can browse incense-scented souqs, watch cultural storytelling under the stars at Sumhuram Park, or take part in heritage workshops and craft markets that reflect centuries-old traditions still alive today.

Spaces like Al Murooj Theatre further elevate the offering, combining live music, cultural forums, and talks that connect visitors with Oman’s vibrant intellectual and artistic scenes. It’s a celebration not just of tourism—but of identity, storytelling, and regional pride.
