Hermès’ Chaîne d’ancre: The Cult Nautical Chain Reimagined in High-Voltage Jewels

Hermès Paris presents the dramatic evolution of a style icon with the newest collection of the Chaîne d’ancre jewelry. What began as an archetypal nautical form has been twisted and transformed by Pierre Hardy, the creative director of Hermès jewellery, who explored various territories by “accumulating, merging and fluidifying” the original link structure. This collection re-establishes the legendary chain as “cult jewellery,” redefining the foundational motif into an extreme statement of precious artistry.

The collection masterfully plays with powerful contrasts, showcasing the Chaîne d’ancre’s unique ability to be simultaneously light and strong, moving seamlessly from minimalist design to extreme sophistication. Every component is an in-depth exploration of materials and forms, featuring astonishing changes of scale that allow the anchor motif to be either a subtle texture or an assertive, distinctive seal. The iconic clasp itself is pulled into the spotlight, now playing a starring role rather than a functional role.

Under Pierre Hardy’s direction, the Chaîne d’ancre enters into unprecedented unions, creating original combinations that are both striking and unexpected. Rows of the nautical chain are multiplied, intermingled, or isolated to create layers of texture and form. The individual links are meticulously reinterpreted, appearing slender or imposing, and are rounded, lengthened, or interlaced to achieve a powerful aesthetic.

The artistry is elevated through the use of precious materials and exquisite gems, transforming the iconic chain into high-impact, high-voltage styles that redefine contemporary fine jewellery. The links become precious in the extreme, crafted in rose or white gold and set with stones like blue sapphires or black spinels. High Jewellery pieces feature stunning pavé-set diamonds and are often finished with a masterful center stone, such as a cushion-cut orange sapphire or a large cabochon-cut multicoloured tourmaline.

The collection pushes boundaries beyond traditional necklaces, bracelets, and rings. One finds the chain dramatically transformed into a surprising ear cuff, allowing the ancestral form to climb the ear with a sense of punk irreverence. In a playful nod to accessories, the collection includes “minaudière” pieces, referred to as little Sacs bijoux in silver or white gold and diamonds, designed to be worn effortlessly around the neck or wrist, proving that high jewellery can be as functional as it is fashionable.

Other pieces embrace a bold, unapologetic attitude. The individual link, with a sense of irreverence, transforms into the Chaîne d’ancre Punk double and triple rings. Meanwhile, the clasp is purposely worn proudly at the front on various designs, challenging the traditional placement of jewellery elements. The entire collection is an exercise in deconstruction and refinement, remaining consistently faithful to the iconic anchor form while embodying the fearless “cavalier spirit” inherent to Hermès.

The expansive collection includes distinct lines such as the multichain designs of the Chaîne d’ancre Multichaînes, the elegant simplicity of the Chaîne d’ancre Danaé necklace, and the subtle drama of the Chaîne d’ancre Calypso bracelets and single earrings, cementing the collection’s status as a must-have for those seeking luxury with an edge.
