Jaquet Droz Revives Botanical Poetry with the Petite Heure Minute Red Gold – Hummingbird

Jaquet Droz unveils a singular creation that reconnects contemporary Haute Horlogerie with the artistic language that defined its origins. The Petite Heure Minute Red Gold – Hummingbird stands as a poetic interpretation of nature, craftsmanship, and mechanical mastery, conceived as a unique commission for a private collector.

Rooted in the Enlightenment-era fascination with botany and natural sciences, the watch draws inspiration from the maison’s earliest works, where birds and flora adorned pocket watches, automata, and objets d’art created to captivate royal courts. The hummingbird, a recurring symbol in Jaquet Droz’s visual universe since the 18th century, returns here as a living motif frozen in time.

The dial is a miniature canvas crafted entirely by hand, featuring two hummingbirds hovering over hibiscus flowers. Executed using refined miniature painting techniques, the birds appear almost sculptural, rising subtly above the landscape despite being painted to an extraordinary thinness. Every floral detail, from petals to pollen grains, is engraved and enamelled with meticulous precision.

Colour plays a central role in the watch’s visual depth. Vivid yet nuanced shades are achieved through multiple firings using traditional Grand Feu enamelling, a demanding process that leaves no margin for error. Graduated tones flow seamlessly across the dial, from the warm chromatic range of the blossoms to the soft transitions of light in the sky.

Encasing this artistry is a 39mm case in 18-carat red gold, echoing the warmth and richness of the dial within. The proportions are deliberately refined, allowing the decorative elements to remain the focal point while offering a harmonious balance between elegance and presence on the wrist.

At the heart of the watch beats a tourbillon positioned at 12 o’clock, symbolising the apex of watchmaking savoir-faire. Its cage and bridge are crafted from translucent sapphire, creating the illusion of weightlessness while showcasing mechanical purity. A silicon escapement enhances durability, while the movement offers an extended power reserve that underscores its technical ambition.

The Petite Heure Minute Red Gold – Hummingbird is more than a timepiece; it is a celebration of heritage interpreted through contemporary excellence. By uniting artistic métiers and high complication watchmaking, Jaquet Droz reaffirms its belief that true innovation begins with a deep understanding of origins, transformed through human skill and imagination.
