The Ishara Art Foundation is proud to present Fragility and Resilience, the first comprehensive solo exhibition by acclaimed artist Ayesha Sultana in the GCC. Running from 6th September to 7th December 2024, this landmark exhibition delves into the intricate balance of vulnerability and strength, offering a profound commentary on the resilience of our planet and humanity.

A Multidimensional Artistic Journey

This thoughtfully curated exhibition highlights Sultana’s unique ability to blur the boundaries between fragility and resilience. Featuring an extensive array of works—including the debut of her hand-blown glass sculptures, new oil paintings, watercolors on Japanese silk tissue, clay-coated paper compositions, and earlier photographic explorations—it invites viewers into a world where art mirrors the delicate interplay of strength and vulnerability.

Adding to its depth, the exhibition provides rare access to Sultana’s sketchbooks, diaries, and unfinished video projects, revealing the raw, intimate stages of her creative process.

A Thematic Exploration Across Three Sections

The exhibition unfolds in three interconnected sections, guiding visitors through a cohesive yet diverse narrative:

  1. Glass Sculptures as Embodiments of Duality
Sultana’s hand-blown glass sculptures, positioned on raised platforms, form the centerpiece of the exhibition. These fragile yet resilient creations, shaped by the breath of the artist, symbolize the tension between life’s delicate beauty and enduring strength. Their organic forms evoke imagery of water droplets, air bubbles, and transparent organs, underscoring the fragility of existence
  2. Marks of Time and Memory
Sultana’s Breath Count and Threshold series explore deeply personal themes. The Breath Count works, etched onto clay-coated paper, reflect moments of introspection and shared human experiences, particularly during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the Threshold series commemorates her late father, blending his photographs with her own in a poignant meditation on time, memory, and loss.
  3. Ephemerality in Tissue Art
The final section showcases works on delicate Japanese silk tissue, transforming this fragile material into a powerful symbol of resilience. Evoking themes of life, fluidity, and the ecosystem, these works reflect an aesthetics of survival despite challenges and destruction.

Beyond the Exhibition

To deepen the engagement, the Ishara Art Foundation will host a series of public programs, including artist talks, workshops, and guided tours, fostering a greater understanding of Sultana’s artistic vision.

A Collaborative Effort

This exhibition features artworks from esteemed collections, including the Samdani Art Foundation, Prateek and Priyanka Raja, Akshay Chudasama, and the Prabhakar Collection, with logistical support from Experimenter. Generous sponsorship by Barclays Private Bank and Carl F. Bucherer further underscores its significance.
