A bold initiative to preserve the Arabian Gulf’s ecosystem and promote sustainable practices
In a remarkable effort to protect marine biodiversity, Atlantis Dubai recently released three honeycomb stingrays and 20 Arabian carpet sharks into the Arabian Gulf. This initiative, part of the ongoing Atlantis Atlas Project, underscores the resort’s dedication to conservation and sustainable practices in the region.
Situated on the coast of the Arabian Gulf—a haven for diverse marine species—Atlantis Dubai has long championed environmental stewardship. The latest release took place at the Jabal Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, a critical site for the region’s ecosystem, increasing the resort’s total contributions to 58 sharks and 10 rays released since 2019.

Breeding and Releasing for a Thriving Marine Ecosystem
Each animal released was carefully nurtured in Atlantis Dubai’s advanced marine facilities. Aged between 8 to 10 months, the sharks and rays were born and raised at the resort before being declared fit for release by its expert Animal Care team. As part of their preparation, the marine animals were encouraged to interact with other species and develop natural foraging behaviors, ensuring a smooth transition into their natural habitat.
“Atlantis Dubai is home to over 65,000 marine animals, and we acknowledge the vital role aquariums play in enhancing biodiversity conservation through initiatives like breeding and reinforcement programs,” stated Kelly Timmins, Executive Director of Sustainability and Marine Animal Operations at Atlantis Dubai.

Community Engagement: A Collective Effort
Atlantis Dubai’s commitment goes beyond marine life releases. This latest initiative also included a beach cleanup in partnership with Dubai Municipality, Nakheel, and GEMS Jumeirah Primary School. Together, volunteers contributed to cleaning the coastline while raising awareness about responsible waste management.
In 2024 alone, the Atlantic team dedicated 118 volunteer hours to environmental efforts, including three cleanup events across beaches and desert ecosystems. Through campaigns like “Save the Butts,” which repurposes cigarette waste into building materials, Atlantis Dubai has mobilized 158 community volunteers and recycled nearly 40,000 cigarette butts since 2022.

A Legacy of Conservation Excellence
As the first destination in the Middle East to receive accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Atlantis Dubai sets a benchmark in animal care and environmental sustainability. The resort’s innovative Atlantis Atlas Project has raised over $250,000 since 2021, contributing directly to conservation efforts worldwide.
With educational programs and initiatives designed to foster a deeper connection with marine life, Atlantis Dubai is not only preserving biodiversity but inspiring future generations to value and protect our oceans.
