In an age where precision is increasingly outsourced to machines, Naissance d’une Montre 3 stands as a testament to the enduring power of human craftsmanship. More than a timepiece, it is a narrative—six years in the making, shaped by patience, tradition, and an unwavering reverence for the passing of time itself. Presented by Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud to mark its tenth anniversary, this exceptional watch is not merely a product; it is a journey deeply rooted in heritage, innovation, and a philosophy that celebrates the process rather than the prize.

Conceived by founder Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and brought to life through the expertise of over 80 artisans and specialists, Naissance d’une Montre 3 is a rare confluence of artistry and technical mastery. Every component, from the temperature-compensated Guillaume-type balance wheel to the constant-force fusee-and-chain transmission, has been handcrafted using traditional tools without any digital assistance. Guided by the eye, hand, and mind, each element honors the legacy of Master Watchmaker Ferdinand Berthoud, whose astronomical inventions continue to inspire horological excellence.
The movement, entirely visible from the dial side, reveals the soul of the watch—its mechanical poetry exposed and celebrated. Encased in a newly designed 44 mm 18-carat gold frame, it fuses aesthetics with precision engineering. The watch’s open structure and central seconds hand echo the timeless elegance of Berthoud’s Astronomical Pocket Watch No. 3, while its contemporary craftsmanship aligns it with the standards of modern luxury horology.

This project required more than skill—it demanded unwavering dedication. Over 11,000 hours of meticulous work were invested, with vintage machine tools operated by micro-mechanical engineers who embraced a philosophy that precision need not be achieved at the expense of tradition. Every screw, gear, and spring embodies a devotion to preserving artisanal techniques in an era increasingly dominated by automation.
Only 11 pieces of Naissance d’une Montre 3 have been produced, each meeting the same stringent quality and finishing criteria as Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud’s contemporary masterpieces. These chronometers are a living proof that craftsmanship and character endure beyond fleeting trends. More than an artifact, the watch is a celebration of “au temps qui instruit”—time, the great teacher, as Louis Berthoud once wrote.

The culmination of this labour of love will be auctioned in November 2025 in Geneva by Phillips in association with Bacs & Russo. Crafted in stainless steel as a unique piece, it will support charitable initiatives dedicated to preserving watchmaking expertise for generations to come—ensuring that time’s legacy is not only celebrated but sustained.
Naissance d’une Montre 3 is not simply a watch; it is a tribute to the hands that build, the minds that dream, and the hours that shape the soul of craftsmanship.
