Considered by many to be the greatest living explorer, Mike Horn is certainly one of the greatest experts about our planet, which he has come to know directly by travelling every mile of land and sea accessible to man, even under the most extreme conditions. The new Submersible Mike Horn Edition, created by Panerai for its most courageous Ambassador, is not only a tough, strong, reliable watch, suitable for wearing during the most challenging enterprises, but it is also an instrument that has used innovative methods involving the recycling of resources to protect our planet and its oceans.
The care taken to conserve resources concerns above all the materials of which the watch is made. The Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition is a professional diving watch, water-resistant to a depth of 300 metres (30 bar), with a special case 47 mm in diameter made of EcoTitanium™, a material first introduced into the world of high quality watchmaking by Panerai, obtained not from the exploitation of natural resources but from recycled titanium. The parts made of EcoTitanium™ are the case, the device protecting the winding crown, the bezel and also the back, engraved on which is Mike Horn’s signature and an image inspired by the creatures which inhabit our seas.
The unidirectional rotating bezel, which has a new design compared to the classic Panerai, enables the duration of each dive to be safely calculated, while legibility in the dark – another of the basic requirements of every professional diving watch – is guaranteed by the use of generous quantities of green Super-LumiNova® on the index markers and the large skeleton hands, which stand out strongly against the black of the sandwich dial. Also clearly visible, in normal situations as well as underwater, are the seconds dial at 9 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock, together with the inscriptions “Panerai Submersible” and “Automatic 300m/1000ft” which are not printed on the dial itself but silk-screened on the sapphire crystal which protects it.
The black strap, light, strong and resistant, is also made of a material designed to minimize environmental impact, obtained from recycled PET. Likewise the special packaging in which the watch is sold is made of recycled materials, with an innovative design inspired by that of the instruments specially made for underwater activities. Inside it there is also a second rubber strap.
The watch is operated by the P.9010 automatic calibre with a power reserve of three days, entirely developed and created by the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, which operates in compliance with the strictest international environmental standards. The building has been designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to zero, and it is equipped with state-of-the-art energy-saving devices and equipment for recovering and reusing waste materials.
In addition, Panerai has also made a special edition of the new Submersible Mike Horn Edition.
The limited edition version (19 examples) of the new Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition will offer its owners the opportunity to undergo an experience truly unique: a few days of intensive training with Mike himself, among the ice floes of the Arctic, a chance to put themselves to test and to confront nature and its challenges, and to become personally aware of the dangers to our ecosystem caused by the impact of humans.
The 19 examples of this limited edition of the Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition, available only in the Panerai boutiques throughout the world, are distinguished from those in the collection not only by the exceptional experience to which they give access but also by those details which make the watch different and unique: the blue of the strap, made of a special material obtained from recycled PET, and the blue of the luminous substance used on the dial and the rotating bezel.
A blue first used by Panerai, which recalls the sea, and it is the ideal colour for celebrating the love of Mike Horn and Panerai for this element.
