The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Souscription watch has been honored with the prestigious “Tourbillon” prize at the 24th Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) awards, held on November 13, 2024, at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva. This recognition underscores the brand’s legacy and innovation in haute horlogerie, marking a significant milestone in its storied journey.

A Revival of Legacy

The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Souscription represents a meticulously crafted homage to the original 1988 tourbillon wristwatch that first solidified the brand’s place in independent watchmaking history. Renowned for its double-ellipse case design, a signature blend of circle and square, the watch was not just an artistic triumph but also a mechanical masterpiece.

This distinctive case design, ideal for showcasing off-centre dials and the one-minute tourbillon, remains a hallmark of the brand’s timeless aesthetic. Executed in traditional yellow gold exclusive to this edition, the case is a mere 9.2 mm thick, maintaining the refined proportions of the original while incorporating subtle ergonomic enhancements.

Crafting History: Then and Now

DANIEL ROTH, established in 1988 by its namesake watchmaker, was a trailblazer in independent watchmaking. Before launching his brand, Daniel Roth was instrumental in shaping modern-day Breguet, where he created its first-ever tourbillon wristwatch. With his inaugural creation—the reference 2187/C187 tourbillon of 1988—Roth set new standards for haute horlogerie, blending intricate complications with a revolutionary aesthetic.

Fast forward 35 years, the Tourbillon Souscription continues this legacy, paying homage to the original while embracing modern craftsmanship. Developed by a small team at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the watch reflects Roth’s ethos: “La Montre Objet d’Art” (The Watch as an Object of Art).

Exceptional Craftsmanship and Design

The Tourbillon Souscription celebrates artisanal expertise. Its solid yellow gold dial, adorned with Clous de Paris guilloche, echoes the original’s intricate detailing while incorporating refined contemporary typography. Produced in the workshop of Kari Voutilainen, a luminary of independent watchmaking, the dial underscores the brand’s enduring influence on today’s watchmaking artisans.

The watch’s hand-soldered lugs and downward-arching design enhance comfort without compromising the iconic double-ellipse silhouette. Inside, the one-minute tourbillon demonstrates the meticulous engineering that defines haute horlogerie, reaffirming DANIEL ROTH’s status as a pioneer in the field.

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Receiving the “Tourbillon” prize at the GPHG 2024 highlights the DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Souscription as a masterpiece that bridges past and present. It celebrates the brand’s rich history, its influence on independent watchmaking, and its dedication to timeless artistry.

For collectors and enthusiasts, the Tourbillon Souscription is not just a watch but a symbol of craftsmanship and innovation, standing tall as a testament to DANIEL ROTH’s enduring impact on the world of luxury timepieces.
