Defying Gravity: Ulysse Nardin Unveils the BLAST Free Wheel Maillechort

In a bold showcase of mechanical mastery and design defiance, Swiss independent watchmaker Ulysse Nardin has launched the BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort], a strikingly unconventional timepiece that pushes the limits of horology. Limited to just 50 pieces worldwide, this avant-garde complication combines a series of visually floating mechanisms with a dial crafted from the rare and character-rich alloy, Maillechort.

The centrepiece of the watch is its visually confounding layout. Within an ultra-glass sapphire crystal case—hollowed from a single block for seamless visibility—key components such as the tourbillon, power reserve display, and flying double-barrel appear to levitate. These elements are not only aesthetic marvels but are feats of engineering precision. At 6 o’clock sits the award-winning Ulysse Anchor Constant Escapement tourbillon, which delivers consistent power through a blade-spring system so delicate, each spring is thinner than a human hair.

First unveiled in 2015 and awarded the GPHG Tourbillon Prize, the escapement system disrupts traditional watchmaking norms. Silicon plays a key role here: it replaces traditional components such as anchor pivots and escapement jewels, thereby enhancing durability, accuracy, and friction resistance. The movement, calibre UN-176, is a manual masterpiece composed of 246 components and offering a full 7-day power reserve.

At 12 o’clock, a twin-barrel system floats seemingly unattached. Precision ball bearings maintain perfect alignment, while a unique power reserve display uses rotating bands to signal energy levels. This innovation marks a major leap in how watch mechanics are visualised and understood—turning the BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort] into both an object of study and admiration.

Craftsmanship extends beyond mechanics. The Maillechort dial, a blend of copper, zinc, and nickel, is prized for its patina-forming properties. Historically used in wind instruments, this “living metal” evolves with time, gaining depth and individuality with each passing year. Its tactile texture and warm grey tone are a deliberate counterpoint to the futuristic engineering above.

Housed in a bold 45mm white gold case with negative-angle facets created through laser cutting, the watch balances aggressive aesthetics with ergonomic harmony. The case back, like the front, offers a full sapphire view framed with Maillechort accents—inviting wearers to appreciate the mechanical ballet from every angle. A waterproof velvet-effect rubber strap and white gold folding clasp complete the elevated design.

The BLAST [Free Wheel Maillechort] is not just a watch—it is a sculptural ode to modern horology. For collectors who seek timepieces that challenge expectations, innovate with integrity, and leave space for storytelling, this limited edition Ulysse Nardin creation offers a glimpse into the future of watchmaking, where mystery meets mastery.
