The Hours and Flowers of La Catrina

Few watches tell a story as vividly as the Jaquet Droz Tourbillon Red Gold – Catrina Skull, a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that bridges Mexican tradition and Swiss artistry. Inspired by La Catrina, the iconic female figure of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, this extraordinary creation is not merely a timekeeper but a canvas of culture, color, and craft. With its exuberant floral detailing and audacious reinterpretation of the skull motif, the piece embodies both the poetic symbolism of life and death and the unyielding precision of haute horlogerie.

La Catrina has long stood as a cultural icon, her origins tracing back to illustrations in the late 19th century and her official naming in the 1930s. Here, she takes new form, brought to life in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Jaquet Droz’s artisans. In defiance of the dark, masculine connotations often tied to skulls, this version is radiant and feminine, adorned with flowers and rich hues that suggest vitality rather than mortality.

The dial itself is a symphony of detail and technique. Catrina occupies two-thirds of the space, her face defined by delicate contrasts of white, pink, violet, and green, while the remaining surface blooms with hand-engraved foliage set in grand feu enamel. Paillons—minute hand-chiselled motifs of gold leaf—glimmer beneath translucent layers, echoing centuries of Jaquet Droz tradition. The artistry here is both meticulous and theatrical, inviting the eye to linger on every nuance.

Anchoring this exuberance is the technical mastery of the flying tourbillon at 12 o’clock. Freed from its upper bridge, the mechanism reveals the regulating organ in all its precision, performing its ballet with microscopic rigor. With an eight-day power reserve, the watch balances whimsy with horological seriousness, as if time itself is measured against La Catrina’s indifference to its passing.

Turn the watch over, and the story continues in secret. The oscillating weight, crafted in mother-of-pearl, is decorated with golden star appliques edged in multicolored foliage, a hidden flourish known only to the collector. In a 39mm red gold case, the piece encapsulates Jaquet Droz’s bold independence—a willingness to honor tradition while daring to reimagine it.

The Catrina Skull is more than a watch; it is a neo-romantic vision of Mexican folklore seen through Swiss craftsmanship, destined for a singular collector who values not just the measurement of time but the artistry that transcends it. In the meeting of mythology and mechanism, La Catrina lives anew, forever framed by hours and flowers.
