In the endless expanse of Morocco’s eastern desert, under the blinding clarity of the Saharan sun, a new chapter in the Defender legacy is being written. The Defender Dakar D7X-R — the first competition-spec model born from the production Defender OCTA — has completed its most demanding test to date, a gruelling endurance trial that pushed machine, driver, and spirit to their limits.

For Defender Rally, this marks a critical milestone in the journey toward its debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally and FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC). Over thousands of kilometres of sand, stone, and heat, the D7X-R demonstrated what the Defender name has always stood for: unrelenting capability, durability, and control in the most unforgiving conditions on earth.

Guiding this next evolution is newly appointed Team Principal Ian James, who also assumes the role of Managing Director, JLR Motorsport. Formerly at the helm of McLaren Electric Racing, James brings precision and strategy to a programme defined by ambition. “It’s an honour to lead the Defender Rally team into the almighty world of rally-raid competition,” he says. “With a world-class driver line-up and the first competition-spec Defender showing its capability in the desert, we are ready to take this challenge head-on.”

The Defender Dakar D7X-R remains true to its lineage. Built on the same robust D7x aluminium architecture as the production OCTA, it carries a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, an identical transmission, and a driveline engineered for extremes. Its bodyshell was crafted on the production line at Defender’s Nitra Manufacturing Centre in Slovakia before its transformation into rally-raid specification at the team’s UK headquarters — a seamless fusion of manufacturing precision and bespoke racing innovation.

In Erfoud, Morocco, Defender’s trio of elite drivers — Stéphane Peterhansel, Sara Price, and Rokas Baciuška — faced punishing stages designed to replicate Dakar conditions. Short loops through soft dunes gave way to expansive routes that traversed wadis, rocky plains, and fast-flowing sand tracks, each kilometre refining performance and resilience. Digital navigation “roadbooks” added to the realism, echoing the split-second decision-making that defines the Dakar.

Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender, reflects on the brand’s bold new direction: “The World Rally-Raid Championship is the ultimate stage to showcase Defender’s capability and durability. Seeing the OCTA evolve into a Dakar contender is extraordinary. With our team, drivers, and leadership now in place, we are ready to meet the desert on its own terms.”

With just months to go before the team takes the start ramp in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, anticipation builds. The Defender D7X-R stands not only as a feat of engineering but as an emblem of endurance — an unstoppable union of power, design, and purpose. As it races toward Dakar, the desert’s silence gives way to the unmistakable sound of legacy in motion.
