IWC Schaffhausen unveils the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium®, presenting one of the brand’s most recognizable watch designs in a bold monochromatic interpretation. Released as a limited edition of 1,500 pieces, the timepiece introduces a dramatic all-black aesthetic that highlights the purity of the Portugieser silhouette. By removing color entirely, the design focuses attention on proportion, symmetry, and the timeless architecture that has defined the Portugieser collection for decades.
The watch features a Ceratanium® case paired with a black dial and a black textured rubber strap, creating a unified visual language across every element of the timepiece. This restrained palette gives the chronograph a stealth-like presence on the wrist while maintaining the refined elegance associated with the Portugieser line. The result is a modern interpretation that balances technical innovation with the brand’s heritage of classic watchmaking.

Ceratanium® represents one of IWC’s most advanced proprietary materials and makes its debut within the Portugieser family through this model. Developed by IWC’s engineering division XPL, the material combines the lightweight strength of titanium with the hardness and durability associated with ceramic. This hybrid material allows the watch to achieve exceptional scratch resistance while maintaining a sophisticated metallic appearance.
The production process behind Ceratanium® involves machining the case components from a specialized titanium alloy before subjecting them to intense heat in a kiln. During this firing stage, the surface transforms, acquiring ceramic-like properties while developing its distinctive dark, matte finish. This process results in a material that is both extremely resilient and visually striking.

Beyond its innovative case construction, the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium® retains the elegant design codes that have long defined the collection. Slim chronograph pushers, balanced subdials, and refined proportions reinforce the watch’s classic identity. The minimalist approach of the dial enhances readability while allowing the sculptural case and signature layout to take centre stage.
The absence of contrasting colours gives the watch a sculptural quality, where light and shadow subtly reveal the curves of the case and dial architecture. This aesthetic approach reflects IWC’s ability to reinterpret heritage designs through contemporary materials and design thinking. It transforms a familiar icon into something entirely new without losing its recognisable identity.

With the Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium®, IWC Schaffhausen demonstrates how innovation in materials can reshape the perception of a classic timepiece. The watch stands as a modern expression of the Portugieser lineage—an object defined by precision engineering, restrained design, and a forward-looking approach to watchmaking.
