Step into the world of timeless elegance and cultural allure at the captivating exhibition “Paris, City of Pearls,” presented by L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts. This extraordinary showcase is a celebration of the enduring passion for pearls that has shaped Parisian luxury, artistry, and history. Running from November 21st, 2024, to June 1st, 2025, this exhibition is a must-visit for jewelry connoisseurs, history enthusiasts, and lovers of Parisian culture.

The Forgotten Trade: Paris and the Gulf Connection

While pearls have adorned the wealthy and powerful since ancient times, few are aware of their role in forging a unique relationship between the Gulf region and France. From the late 1860s to the 1930s, Paris became the world’s leading hub for natural pearls, importing treasures from the Gulf’s “Pearl Coast” through intricate trade routes spanning land, sea, and sky.

During this period, Parisian jewelers, particularly those based in the legendary Place Vendôme, transformed Gulf-sourced pearls into exquisite masterpieces. The trade sparked an economic boom, intertwining the destinies of Gulf merchants and Parisian artisans. The exhibition delves into this rich history through archival documents, telegrams, and period photographs, offering a glimpse into the lives, fortunes, and artistry of the era.

A Cultural Symbol of the Roaring Twenties

The allure of pearls transcended jewelry, inspiring a cultural renaissance in Paris during the 1910s and 1920s. From operas and paintings to photography and cinema, pearls became an emblem of modernity and creative expression, embodying the glamour and exuberance of the Roaring Twenties.

The exhibition captures this cultural zeitgeist, showcasing works by celebrated artists like George Barbier and Jean-Gabriel Domergue, whose illustrations and advertisements for luxury brands like Van Cleef & Arpels immortalized pearls as symbols of elegance and innovation.

A Dazzling Collection of Masterpieces

“Paris, City of Pearls” presents a curated selection of over 100 jewelry pieces and 50 archival documents, sourced from some of the world’s most prestigious collections, including:

  • Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris
  • Petit Palais – Fine Arts Museum of Paris
  • Van Cleef & Arpels Heritage Collection
  • Cartier
  • Fred
  • Albion Art private collection

Highlights include a natural pearl and diamond necklace from 1890, a 1930s brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels, and rare illustrations from the Gazette du Bon Ton, offering a glimpse into the opulent world of Parisian jewelry.

An Immersive Experience: Art, Science, and History

Divided into six sections, the exhibition explores the multifaceted significance of pearls through a blend of art, science, and history:

  1. The Pearl and Its Secrets: Unveiling the gemological origins of pearls.
  2. Pearls and the East: Tracing the journey of Gulf pearls to France.
  3. Conquering the Market Circa 1900: Exploring the booming trade during the Belle Époque.
  4. The Pearl as a Symbol of Modernity: The 1910s: Showcasing pearls’ rise as a cultural icon.
  5. 1925: Pearl Mania in Paris: Highlighting the peak of pearl popularity during the Art Deco era.
  6. The Parisian Pearl: Past & Present: Connecting the historical legacy to contemporary design.

The scenography employs a sensory approach, engaging visitors through sight, sound, and touch. A visual guide extends the experience, offering access to 80 additional illustrations and documents that enrich the narrative of pearls from the Belle Époque to today.

The Vision of L’ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts

Founded in 2012 with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels, L’ÉCOLE is dedicated to sharing the culture and craftsmanship of jewelry. Through classes, talks, and exhibitions, it fosters public appreciation for the history, science, and artistry behind the world’s most iconic adornments.
