Louvre Abu Dhabi proudly announces the opening of its latest exhibition, Kings and Queens of Africa: Forms and Figures of Power, marking a historic moment as the first exhibition in the UAE and the region dedicated to African art and cultural heritage. Running until 25 May 2025, this extraordinary showcase brings together over 350 rare and significant African artworks, offering a deep dive into the artistic and historical richness of the continent.
A Historic Collaboration Honoring African Art
This monumental exhibition is presented in partnership with Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac and France Muséums, with the invaluable support of HONOR as the official exhibition partner and Valrhona as the exhibition sponsor. The inauguration ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including H.E. Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Hon. Hannatu Musa Musawa, and H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, highlighting the significance of this global collaboration.



Exploring Africa’s Cultural Legacy and Power
Spanning from the 11th to the 21st century, Kings and Queens of Africa delves into the historical and cultural narratives of African kingdoms, dynasties, and leadership through meticulously curated sculptures, royal regalia, ceremonial objects, and textiles. The exhibition is divided into three major sections:
- West Africa: Showcasing masterpieces from Ife, Benin, Akan, Yoruba, and Danhomè cultures, featuring intricate sculptures and symbols of leadership.
- Central Africa: Highlights the artistic expressions of the Kongo, Luba, and Teke kingdoms, emphasizing the connection between power and spirituality.
- Southern and Eastern Africa: Celebrates Zulu and Ethiopian artistry, presenting unique cultural artifacts that have shaped regional identities.
The exhibition also presents contemporary African art, including works from renowned artists such as Abdoulaye Konaté and Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, along with a special focus on African Pop Art, comics, and video games.

Curators and Experts Behind the Exhibition
Curated by Hélène Joubert, El Hadji Malick Ndiaye, and Cindy Olohou, along with contributions from Mariam AlDhaheri of Louvre Abu Dhabi, this exhibition embodies a multi-voiced approach to storytelling, ensuring a diverse and inclusive representation of Africa’s artistic legacy.

- Crowned head of Queen Oluwo, Ife, Nigeria (14th/15th century)
- Royal gilded shoes, Baule, Côte d’Ivoire
- Akan throne, Côte d’Ivoire/Ghana
- Nkisi Nkondi magical figurine, Kongo, Congo
- Mansa Musa in Hajj tapestry, a contemporary depiction of the legendary Malian ruler’s pilgrimage
- Fluctuating Throne by Gonçalo Mabunda, made from decommissioned weapons, symbolizing resilience and transformation


Cultural and Educational Programmes
Accompanying the exhibition, Louvre Abu Dhabi will host a series of cultural events and educational activities, including:
- International Symposium (28–30 January): Gathering over 23 speakers from Africa and beyond to discuss museum narratives and the future of African heritage preservation.
- Coffee Festival (14–16 February): Exploring African-Arab coffee traditions through live Ethiopian and local coffee ceremonies.
- Masquerave (15 February): An exclusive music and performance event featuring DJ Black Coffee and his son, Sona, blending house, African percussion, and electronic music.
- Outdoor Gallery & Night Projections: Showcasing Black Starliner, a monumental sculpture by Zak Ové, and mesmerizing projections by Dr. Esther Mahlangu.
