Johan Bülow is on a mission to make Lakrids, with their unique and varied flavours, the latest acquired taste across the region. In case you are wondering, Lakrids by Johan Bülow is a Danish range of the finest liquorice covered in chocolate, made using premium raw materials and with no additives.

Liquorice is a Scandinavian favourite that Bülow feels is underappreciated and possesses an excellent growth potential globally.

Inspired by his mother and his love for liquorice, Bülow decided a decade ago to dedicate himself to the sweet delicacy. After many hours spent in perfecting the craft, he opened his first shop on a small Danish island in 2007, with the idea of cooking liquorice in the shop, to lure passers-by with its fresh aroma. His idea was so successful that he soon had to install a liquorice making machine to keep up with the demand. Bülow then began coating the liquorice with layers of Belgian chocolate, which in turn blended with a variety of ingredients from blueberries to sea salt to passion fruit. The resulting balls culinary delight are known today as Lakrids.

Johan Bülow, Founder and CEO, Lakrids

Liquorice comes from the sweet taproot of the perennial Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) plant. It is native to the Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia. Traditionally, liquorice was used more as a medicine than as a spice. Lakrids sources the finest liquorice from Afghanistan, Persia and Italy which are then boiled for four hours in an open pot. The liquorice melts into a caramel-like consistency resulting in a concentration flavour. All the flavours are made from natural ingredients, using rice flour, and are gluten-free. Lakrids also produces sweet and salty liquorice syrup and liquorice powder.

The wide range of flavours offered include Crispy Rose, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, the gourmet flavours of Sweet & Salty Liquorice, Red Liquorice, Dark & Coffee Choc Coated Liquorice, Habanero Chilli Liquorice to name a few. Seasonal specials include Berry Chocolate coated with Passion Fruit, Caramel with dusted liquorice powder. For special occasions, Lakrids introduces limited edition collections with blueberry, sea buckthorn, mango and vanilla, among others.

The First Flagship boutique in the UAE is scheduled to be unveiled at The Dubai Mall New extension in November 2018.
