A Secret in Time: Jaquet Droz Unveils the Petite Heure Minute Red Gold – Japanese Garden

A unique timepiece, with 25 hand-carved mother-of-pearl appliqués, each executed to tenths of a millimetre, showcasing extraordinary artisanal mastery.

A Dial Carved from Light

Jaquet Droz has revealed a unique creation that stands as a milestone in artistic watchmaking: the Petite Heure Minute Red Gold – Japanese Garden. Developed in close collaboration with a collector, the piece showcases the manufacture’s mastery of métiers d’art through an entirely hand-crafted mother-of-pearl dial composed of 25 individual appliques.

Unlike traditional decorative approaches, mother-of-pearl is not merely applied to a precious metal base here—it is the dial itself. Carved from ultra-white mother-of-pearl sourced from the Pacific, the surface is engraved and assembled by hand to tolerances measured in tenths of a millimetre, resulting in a composition of remarkable precision and depth.

A Landscape Shaped by Precision

The scene depicted unfolds like a tranquil Japanese garden suspended in time. At the upper edge of the dial stands a traditional temple, its rooflines, balconies, and tiered floors rendered in delicate relief. A subtle application of semi-translucent grey paint creates the illusion of shadow, allowing the architecture to emerge with striking three-dimensionality.

In the foreground, the landscape comes alive through 25 appliques positioned above the engraved dial. Reeds and water lilies occupy one side, while a cherry tree and lantern balance the composition on the other. At the centre, koi carp glide through the water, animating the scene with quiet movement.

Among the most technically demanding elements are the reed stems, some measuring just 0.1 millimetres in thickness. Jaquet Droz developed a bespoke assembly process to allow these fragile components to connect seamlessly—an exercise in precision that underscores the extreme limits of hand craftsmanship.

Mother-of-Pearl as Medium

The majority of the appliques are carved from mother-of-pearl, with select details—such as the cherry tree branches and lantern frame—executed in yellow gold. At the centre of the dial sits a mother-of-pearl cabochon that reflects the river and its carp with uncanny realism, faithfully reproducing imagery even on its subtly curved surface.

The effect recalls the painterly illusion seen in Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, where light and reflection elevate material into something almost lifelike. This interplay of realism and artistry is central to the watch’s visual impact.

Depth, Detail, and Hidden Craft

Additional layers of detail enhance the sense of perspective. The hour and minute hands glide beneath the decorative elements, positioned with microscopic accuracy. The koi carp appear to swim below the water lilies, their presence punctuated by 0.5 mm diamonds set into their eyes, catching the light at the surface.

Gold paillons form floating leaves atop engraved ripples and pebbles, while the glass box crystal atop the red gold case reveals decoration beneath the appliques—engraved by hand, even in areas visible only to the wearer. It is a discreet flourish that reinforces the watch’s singular character.

A Singular Expression of Identity

Created as a unique piece, the Petite Heure Minute Red Gold – Japanese Garden embodies Jaquet Droz’s philosophy of personal expression through craftsmanship. Every element, from material selection to assembly, serves the idea of individuality—a watch conceived not for repetition, but for resonance.

As the maison’s guiding principle states: Create your own. As unique as you are.
