In a masterful celebration of precision engineering and artistic craftsmanship, IWC Schaffhausen introduces its latest horological marvel — the Portugieser Tourbillon Rétrograde Chronograph, a timepiece that epitomizes the convergence of elegance and technical mastery. Limited to just 100 pieces, this striking model encapsulates the brand’s continued evolution in fine watchmaking, offering a rare blend of performance and prestige that resonates with collectors and connoisseurs alike.

This exceptional timepiece is presented in a 43.5 mm case made from 18-carat Armor Gold®, a proprietary alloy developed by IWC for enhanced durability and scratch resistance. The case is paired with an obsidian-coloured dial, a deep, almost-black surface brought to life through an intricate, 60-step lacquering process. Comprising 15 layers of transparent lacquer, the dial achieves an astonishing visual depth that feels almost three-dimensional under the light. Complemented by gold-plated hands and solid gold appliques, the result is a dial that is both commanding and contemplative.

One of the watch’s most captivating features is the flying minute tourbillon positioned at 6 o’clock. Constructed from 56 individual components and weighing a mere 0.675 grams, this complex mechanism serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose. By placing the escape wheel and pallet lever in a rotating cage, the tourbillon counteracts the effects of gravity, ensuring improved accuracy over time. The tourbillon is also fitted with a hacking function, allowing the wearer to stop the cage and set the time with to-the-second precision. IWC’s use of silicone components coated with Diamond Shell® technology minimizes friction and optimizes energy flow within the movement.

Balancing the visual allure of the tourbillon is the practical charm of the retrograde date display located at 9 o’clock. In a sweeping arc, the date hand glides from 1 to 31 and jumps back to its starting position at the beginning of each month — a poetic gesture that elegantly reflects the cyclical nature of time. At 12 o’clock, a chronograph subdial combines the hour and minute counters in a single totaliser. True to its technical sophistication, the watch also features a flyback function, allowing for swift restarting of the chronograph at the press of a button.

Driving these complications is the IWC-manufactured 89900 calibre — a self-winding movement composed of 375 meticulously finished parts. With a frequency of 4 Hz and a generous 68-hour power reserve, the movement is visible through a sapphire glass case back, revealing Geneva stripes, circular graining, and a solid gold oscillating weight. This finely decorated movement represents the beating heart of a watch that is as much about artistry as it is about accuracy.
