In 1993, two landmark events coincided related to the house of Chopard. Caroline Scheufele, the co-president and artistic director of the brand dreamed up the now famous Happy Sport watch. The other landmark event was the opening of the Chopard boutique at Wafi Mall by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons. It was the brand’s first established boutique in the United Arab Emirates.
To commemorate this twin silver jubilee, the Maison has unveiled the 25-piece Happy Sport Dubai Limited Edition; a special edition to join the iconic collection.
The Dubai Edition’s two-tone identity is playfully highlighted through an 18ct rose gold and stainless steel 30mm case, topped by a diamond-set bezel. The Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial is adorned with dancing diamonds as well as two special dancing lucky charms: the “2” and “5” Arabic numerals remind us of the dual anniversary. It is fitted with a stainless steel ‘rice bead’ bracelet, a vintage reinterpretation of the original design chosen for the very first Happy Sport.
In 1993, Caroline Scheufele designed a sports watch based on what was at the time an original and surprising association between steel and diamonds. It created a sensation because it was the first time that Chopard’s iconic ‘Happy Diamonds’ was offered in steel. Since then, over half a million Happy Sport watches have been sold and the model represents the majority of Chopard’s ladies’ watches sold. Having appeared in countless different versions, shapes, sizes, embellishments and customisations, Happy Sport became the first women’s collectible watch.
In its 25 years of existence, it has overturned the traditional relationship with time as it is not merely worn to tell the time, but instead offers “a chance to enjoy the marvellous sight of joyful dancing diamonds. An endless performance of ballet dancers spinning on the wrist.” Happy Sport’s 25 years has been a celebration, of a very feminine Joie de Vivre.
