Jaquet Droz Creates the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire–Opal, A Singular Masterpiece Across Centuries

With the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire–Opal, Jaquet Droz unveils a one-of-a-kind creation that bridges centuries, cultures, and philosophies of watchmaking. Designed for a private collector, the timepiece represents one of the most ambitious expressions of the Maison’s three-hundred-year legacy, uniting ancestral symbolism with advanced contemporary innovation in a single, uncompromising vision.

The dragon, a powerful emblem deeply rooted in Asian culture, forms the emotional and visual core of the watch. Its presence also echoes the historic journeys of Pierre Jaquet-Droz to Asia in the eighteenth century, while drawing modern inspiration from fantasy artist John Howe, long associated with the brand. Coiled within the lower section of the case, the dragon is not merely decorative—it is alive, animated through one of the most complex automaton sequences ever conceived in modern haute horlogerie.

Comprising sixteen independent and randomly activated animations, the dragon moves with hypnotic fluidity. Its spine undulates, eyes and jaw open and close, its tongue flickers, the crest rises and falls, and its claws grasp a rotating Akoya pearl. Cultivated using specialised Japanese techniques, the pearl adds both symbolic and tactile richness, marking a rare horological first while reinforcing the piece’s cross-cultural narrative.

Minerality defines the watch’s visual language. The main dial is carved from opal, a gemstone long associated with life, transformation, and iridescence. Its constantly shifting hues mirror the perpetual motion of the dragon itself. The collector’s preference for darker blue tones gives the dial depth and mystery, allowing light to play unpredictably across its surface.

A secondary dial crafted from onyx offers a striking counterpoint. Its intense black surface provides perfect legibility for the white gold hands, anchoring the watch’s expressive artistry with functional clarity. This dialogue between opal and onyx balances emotion and precision, spectacle and restraint.

Encasing the entire creation is a fully transparent sapphire case, engineered without screws or inserts through an innovative construction system. This architectural purity allows uninterrupted light to flood the watch, revealing both its sculptural interior and mechanical complexity. The transparency transforms the piece into a wearable microcosm, where movement, material, and light exist in continuous conversation.

Every element of the Imperial Dragon Automaton Sapphire–Opal is shaped by human hands. The dragon is sculpted and hand-chiselled from solid white gold, each dial is hand-cut, and the movement’s hundreds of components are individually assembled and finished. Subtle inscriptions honour both the brand’s founder and the individuality of the piece itself. More than a timekeeper, this creation stands as a manifesto—proof that haute horlogerie can still unite mythology, technology, and artistry into a single, eternal object.
