URWERK UR-101 T-Rex Watch: Bronze Texture, Futuristic Satellite Movement, and Limited Edition Craftsmanship

URWERK reawakens a legend with the launch of the UR-101 T-Rex—a radical reimagining of the brand’s original time-telling satellite watch. Presented during Geneva Watch Week on March 19, 2025, the new iteration is a tactile, visual, and mechanical journey that merges prehistory with futuristic engineering. A limited edition of just 100 pieces, the UR-101 T-Rex doesn’t just sit on the wrist—it lives there.

Crafted from guilloché-finished bronze that evolves with time and touch, the watch offers a rich and personal patina that makes each piece as unique as its wearer. The organic scale-like engraving spans the case, bezel, and lugs, giving the timepiece a raw, almost primal appeal. For collectors and design purists alike, it’s an experience that is as much about feel as it is about form. The textured bronze is reactive—it oxidises and reforms naturally with wear, echoing the regenerative qualities of living skin.

Sized at 41mm with a slim profile of just under 12mm, the UR-101 T-Rex is ergonomic in both concept and execution. Its asymmetrical shape subtly leans into the wearer’s line of sight, offering an intuitive view of the wandering hours—URWERK’s hallmark complication. Two satellites rotate across a 180-degree scale, powered by the new self-winding UR-1.01V calibre. With a 48-hour power reserve and 4Hz frequency, the movement is a tribute to co-founder Felix Baumgartner’s roots in horological innovation and his early mentorship under Svend Andersen.

For URWERK, the T-Rex isn’t just a name—it’s a reference point. The aesthetic draws from cinematic creatures, sci-fi spacecrafts like the Millennium Falcon, and even Sumerian etymology, fusing pop culture and historical symbolism. Artistic Director Martin Frei describes the piece as “a collision of eras”—where the mythology of dinosaurs meets the machinery of tomorrow. The result is a wearable artifact that balances bronze-age craft with space-age imagination.

Beneath the engraved bronze shell, the sapphire crystal reveals a Super-LumiNova-enhanced display that glows with an otherworldly intensity in the dark. The caseback in black PVD-coated steel and the steel-PEEK crown puller provide functional contrast and modern material integration. The entire case is pressure-tested to 30 meters, ensuring real-world durability.

Completing the look is a black rubber strap with a calfskin lining and DLC-treated buckle—technical, understated, and made for movement.

The UR-101 T-Rex is a timepiece that bridges tactile satisfaction with conceptual artistry. It’s not only about what time it is, but what it feels like to carry 66 million years of design evolution on your wrist.
