Driving Conservation Forward: Defender and Tusk Expand Partnership in Africa

For nearly two decades, Defender has been a stalwart partner of Tusk, a conservation charity devoted to safeguarding Africa’s endangered species and biodiversity. In a bold move to further this mission, Defender has unveiled an enhanced commitment to Tusk’s initiatives, underlining its dedication to creating sustainable change across the continent.

A Renewed Focus on African-Led Conservation

Defender’s expanded partnership includes funding six flagship conservation projects, with the first three taking root in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. These projects, selected for their transformative potential, will focus on critical activities like tracking, rescuing, and rehabilitating endangered species, along with habitat preservation. Equally vital is the emphasis on education and community engagement, fostering a collective responsibility toward conservation.

Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender, highlighted the brand’s role in supporting these efforts:

“The Defender brand, its vehicles, and its culture of technological innovation are perfectly placed to help teams navigate vast and challenging landscapes to support the species, habitats, and communities that need it most.”

The projects also reflect Defender’s ethos of blending robust engineering with a commitment to social impact, symbolizing an “unstoppable spirit” in tackling conservation challenges.

Key Flagship Initiatives

  • Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia: Pioneering efforts to protect the region’s iconic black rhinos.
  • Wild Entrust in Botswana: Developing solutions to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
  • VulPro in South Africa: Dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating endangered vultures.

Championing Rangers: The Wildlife Ranger Challenge

Defender’s continued sponsorship of Tusk’s Wildlife Ranger Challenge exemplifies its commitment to frontline conservation. Since its inception, this initiative has supported over 11,500 rangers and raised $21 million for wildlife protection. Rangers, often unsung heroes, safeguard 45 endangered species across 36 million hectares annually.

Nick Bubb, CEO of Tusk, remarked:

“Our partnership with Defender continues to go from strength to strength. Building on the solid foundations of almost 20 years of collaboration, we are entering a new and exciting era. “Our joint approach to accelerate the impact of African-driven conservation agenda across Africa puts communities at the heart of our mission. “

Celebrating Excellence in Conservation

Defender’s support extends to the Tusk Awards, which honor individuals making groundbreaking contributions to conservation. This year’s ‘Conservation in Africa’ award was presented to Edward Aruna, founder of the Reptile and Amphibian Programme in Sierra Leone. Edward’s efforts to protect marine turtles have not only galvanized local communities but also prompted governmental action toward stricter wildlife protections.

The Legacy Continues

Defender’s enduring partnership with Tusk is a testament to the power of collaboration in addressing global conservation challenges. From the rugged terrains of Africa to the elegant stage of the annual Lewa Marathon, Defender remains a symbol of resilience and innovation, driving meaningful change across the continent.
