RM Sotheby’s is set to host its much-anticipated Milan debut on 22 May, with the industrial grandeur of Fonderia Macchi Carlo serving as the stage for an array of exceptional collector cars. Formerly the venue for fashion houses like Gucci and Valentino, the space now welcomes a different kind of design excellence: one that roars to life with history, elegance, and mechanical mastery.

Each consignment in this extraordinary lineup tells a story—some of royalty, others of racing heritage, and many of timeless beauty. Here’s a look at the standout cars set to cross the block.

1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Cabriolet by Pinin Farina

The Star of the Sale

At the very centre of attention is the exquisite 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Cabriolet, a car whose unique provenance and elegance have already cemented its place as the showstopper of the Milan auction. First delivered to HRH Prince Filiberto of Savoy-Genoa and showcased at the 1933 Monte Carlo Concours d’Elegance, the car later came into the possession of Italian racing driver Vittorio Belmondo, who commissioned its now-iconic one-off bodywork in 1937.

Its alluring curves and heritage make this 8C not just a machine, but a moving sculpture—a blend of royal history and bespoke craftsmanship destined for the world’s most elite concours events.

1930 Alfa Romeo 6C Gran Sport Spider Series IV by Zagato

A Storied Racing Heritage

Steeped in the romance of pre-war motorsport, this 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C Spider is a Series IV model shaped by Zagato’s revered design language. With multiple appearances in the Mille Miglia Storica and a racing résumé that includes Phil Hill behind the wheel during the 1985 Monterey Historic Automobile Races, this is a car that blends pedigree with presence.

Having recently undergone a full service by Jim Stokes Workshops in the UK, it remains one of the most compelling examples of 1930s Italian engineering ever created.

1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport by Pinin Farina

Post-War Elegance in Motion

Representing the post-war evolution of the 6C lineage, this 1949 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport is one of only 383 made—and even fewer were finished with Pinin Farina’s elegant cabriolet bodywork. Once owned by Alfa Romeo gentleman racer Franco Bol, the car combines mechanical excellence with elegant proportion, making it equally suited to concours lawns and grand touring routes.

1969 Ferrari 365 GTC by Pininfarina

A Rare Gem of the Jet Set Era

Italian design house Pininfarina continues its legacy of beauty and balance with this early production 1969 Ferrari 365 GTC. As just the seventh car off the limited production run of 150, and having remained in Italian ownership since new, it carries a sense of unbroken history. This model encapsulates the mid-century grand touring spirit Ferrari defined—with flowing lines, quiet opulence, and a soul built for the open road.

1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing

Collector Dream in Blaugrau

Among the most iconic post-war sports cars, the 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing stands tall in both engineering innovation and timeless desirability. This example, presented in a rare factory Blaugrau (now silver) finish, is one of just four originally delivered in this colour. Equipped with a sought-after NSL engine and Rudge knock-on wheels, it comes from 37 years of continuous ownership and represents a rarely seen level of originality and preservation.

1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster

An Open-Top Legend in Pristine Form

Completing the duo of SLs is a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster—one of only 209 of the later models fitted with an alloy engine block and disc brakes. Acquired directly from its first owner in 1996, the Roadster is presented in an elegant Light Blue over Roser leather combination and includes its original hardtop. A masterclass in sophisticated open-air motoring, this example is a definitive piece of Mercedes-Benz history.

The Milan Auction: Where Heritage Meets Glamour
This diverse gathering of historically significant and aesthetically masterful vehicles reflects not only the craftsmanship of their eras but also RM Sotheby’s unparalleled curatorial eye. With the dramatic setting of Fonderia Macchi Carlo and a catalogue brimming with icons, this Milan auction is shaping up to be an unmissable event for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
