One of the most consequential competition cars in Ferrari history is set to command the spotlight when RM Sotheby’sreturns to Paris. Headlining the landmark auction is Alfonso de Portago’s Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione ‘Tour de France’, a machine whose victory reshaped Ferrari nomenclature and cemented its place in endurance racing legend.

Piloted and owned by the charismatic aristocrat and racing icon Alfonso de Portago, this particular Ferrari achieved overall victory at the 1956 Tour de France Automobile, one of the most demanding multi-day races of its era. That triumph was so decisive it gave rise to the now-mythical “Tour de France” designation, permanently attaching the car’s achievement to Ferrari’s model lineage.

Chassis 0557GT occupies a singular position in automotive history. It is the only known Ferrari to directly inspire the renaming of its own model family following a single competitive victory. As one of the earliest long-wheelbase 250 GT Berlinettas clothed by Scaglietti, it represents the purest fusion of lightweight design, mechanical potency and aerodynamic purpose.

Beyond its defining victory, the car’s competition record remains unmatched. Following its Tour de France success, it secured further overall wins and class-leading performances across Europe, finishing its active racing life undefeated. Such a flawless period record is exceptionally rare, even among the most revered competition Ferraris.

Its provenance has only deepened with time. Having passed through the stewardship of esteemed collectors, the car later achieved top honours at one of the world’s most prestigious concours events, reinforcing its dual identity as both a racing thoroughbred and a design masterpiece. Certification by Ferrari Classiche further confirms its integrity, with original engine, gearbox, axle and bodywork preserved.

What elevates this Berlinetta beyond mechanical excellence is its role in defining Ferrari’s post-war competition philosophy. The 250 GT Tour de France lineage became a proving ground for the marque’s dominance in endurance racing, laying foundations for future legends that followed on circuits and roads worldwide.

As it prepares to appear before collectors in Paris, this Ferrari stands not merely as an auction highlight, but as a tangible chapter of motorsport history. A car that did not just win races, but altered the course of a legendary marque, it remains an enduring symbol of ambition, bravery and automotive innovation at its most authentic.
