Swedish automaker Volvo Cars is set to unveil the all-electric Volvo EX60, a mid-size SUV designed to blend advanced electrification with conversational AI. Positioned as a software-defined vehicle from launch, the EX60 introduces natural voice interaction powered by Gemini, an AI assistant developed by Google. The result is a car that evolves continuously, integrating intelligence at the core of its architecture.
The EX60 becomes the first Volvo to launch with Gemini fully embedded, enabling multi-turn natural conversations without rigid voice commands. Drivers can search emails for hotel bookings, check if luggage fits inside the trunk, or generate travel ideas — all hands-free. By reducing reliance on physical controls and the central display, Volvo aims to enhance focus and road safety through intuitive interaction.
At the heart of the EX60 lies HuginCore, Volvo’s newly named in-house electrical and software architecture. Encompassing the core computer, zone controllers and integrated systems, HuginCore defines the EX60 as a true software-defined car. Built in collaboration with technology leaders including Qualcomm Technologies and NVIDIA, the system balances proprietary development with cutting-edge external platforms.
Processing capability represents a major leap forward. The EX60 runs on the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform and Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform, delivering Volvo’s most powerful computing performance to date. At its centre sits the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin system-on-a-chip, capable of handling over 250 trillion operations per second. This immense computing power ensures instantaneous infotainment response, seamless map rendering and ultra-responsive voice recognition.
Beyond convenience, the EX60 applies artificial intelligence to safety. Through its extensive array of sensors, the vehicle continuously analyses and interprets its environment in real time. This situational awareness enhances advanced driver assistance features, enabling earlier hazard detection and smoother, more controlled responses. The car also learns collectively from global Volvo fleet data, including real-world incidents and near-misses, reinforcing its safety evolution over time.
The EX60 benefits from Volvo’s Superset tech stack, enabling regular over-the-air updates that refine software, expand functionality and deepen AI integration. Future upgrades are expected to allow Gemini to interpret live camera feeds and contextualise surroundings. This forward-compatible framework ensures the vehicle remains technologically relevant well beyond its initial release.
Electrification remains central to the EX60’s proposition. In its all-wheel-drive configuration, the SUV delivers a maximum range of up to 810km on a single charge. When connected to a 400kW fast charger, the EX60 can add up to 340km of range in just ten minutes. Combined with intelligent software, rapid charging and evolving AI capabilities, the EX60 signals Volvo’s next chapter in intelligent electric mobility.
